Copyright Protects your Original Work from Piracy

For writers, artists, musicians and software developers, there’s nothing worse than finding your original creation pirated and published by an unscrupulous party who claims it as their own. If you fail to apply for a copyright prior to the infringement, you essentially lose ownership and the right to sue the infringer.

Although a copyright is automatically created with a copyright notation, e.g., ‘Copyright your name, date’ on the original work, applying for a copyright registration makes your ownership airtight under the law.

To begin the copyright registration process, visit the U.S. Copyright web site. Carefully read through the various categories listed to determine to correct form to file and follow the filing instructions to the letter. Using the wrong form will result in a delay in your application.

Even with a flawless application, your copyright registration will take several months from the date of application to actually obtaining your registration. Your work is nonetheless protected from the date you apply for a copyright so long as you mail the application and work via registered mail.

Copyrighted works are protected for your lifetime plus 70 years. Your heirs must renew the copyright to retain ownership of your work.

Be aware that you may obtain a copyright for as many as 30 individual works in a single application. Although the filing fee is nominal, considering the advantages gained by applying for a copyright, you are well advised to copyright additional works, such as a poem or short story previously unregistered along with your current main work, such as a book.

However, applying for a copyright for multiple works requires that each individual work pertains to the same category. For example, a musician can register multiple original compositions in one registration, but cannot register a mix of songs and multimedia creations in a single application.

Many artists suffer infringement without legal recourse simply because they cannot afford the filing fee at the time of creation. There have been cases where Federal protection has been granted through an alternative process. Make a copy of your work and mail it via registered U.S. mail to yourself.

When you receive the postmarked work, leave it sealed and retain in a safe location. If you do have to sue for infringement, the unopened registered mail may be acceptable as proof of your ownership. This is not failsafe, so consult a copyright attorney to determine the degree of protection this method affords you. In any case, as soon as you can scare up the filing fee, apply for a copyright! This protection is well worth the fee.

Affiliates How to Make Money

Generate passive income on your website. If you’ve got a website, you know there’s no such thing as too much traffic. That’s what we all want. The more visitors you have, the greater your income will be. You may have a terrific product or service, but without sufficient traffic and good rankings in the search engines, your business venture may not succeed. Many sites fail for lack of content.

Others may limp along with a few sales each day, but nothing to write home about, or for that matter, to pay the bills. Every website can benefit from participating in some of the thousands upon thousands of affiliate network programs. No question about it, affiliates make money.

If you’re not conversant in the affiliate programs, you’ll be well rewarded if you take the time to learn how these programs work. Basically, affiliate programs allow you to generate passive income by advertising products or services offered by other websites. Think of it this way: you are marketing another companies’ site offerings and being paid for doing so. The concept works well for both parties. You get paid for a little space on your site and the advertiser saves a bundle on publicity and marketing.

Affiliates make money, but you’re well advised to choose your advertisers carefully. You are going to realize the greatest amount of this passive income when you target affiliates with products and services related to your site’s offerings and content. For example, if you’re selling fine china, it doesn’t make much sense to be advertising tractor equipment.

You won’t get any click-throughs from your customers and you won’t make any money. On the other hand, if you advertise blown glass or gourmet foods, these are products your visitors may well be interested in. Target your customer’s interests. Don’t waste valuable advertising space.

Some affiliate programs pay more than others. Pay-per-click programs may generate just a few cents each. This means that you’ll need thousands of clicking visitors to accrue a modest amount of income. Many of the PPC programs won’t issue you a check until your clicks have accrued to a certain amount.

You could wait months before you realized a profit of $25. If you join many such affiliate programs, you might eventually accumulate a few hundred bucks, but you’ll be waiting for these checks for a while.

While affiliates make money for some websites, the trick to a goodly amount of regular passive income lies in choosing targeted and popular products and services and presenting them on the pages of your site that are directly related to that content.

Google offers an excellent affiliate program. Google spiders your site and places ads on your pages relevant to your content. You’re saved a ton of research and you’re paid in one fell swoop.

Do some research to find the most popular and relevant affiliates. Affiliates make money. You need to coordinate the programs best suited to your site.
